SAPS confirms student protests at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus after a court ordered the release of a suspect in Sisonke Mbolekwa’s murder. The release has sparked outrage among students demanding justice.
SAPS emphasized that the decision to release the suspect was made by the court under lawful procedures, stating that the police have no influence over judicial outcomes. The investigation into Mbolekwa’s death remains active and is being treated as a priority, with ongoing collaboration between SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority.
While affirming students’ constitutional right to peaceful protest, SAPS condemned reports of vandalism, arson, and road blockades. Public order police (POP) units have been deployed to maintain safety and prevent further damage.
Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, appealed for calm, urging students to express their concerns through legal and peaceful channels. “We encourage those who are aggrieved to channel grievances through lawful avenues,” she said, calling on the student body to honor Mbolekwa’s memory without resorting to violence.
Three students have been arrested and are facing charges related to public violence and property damage.
