South Africa has taken a major step in its clean energy transition as the Vunumoya Main Transmission Station (MTS) was officially handed over by Seriti Green to Eskom and NTCSA. The R1 billion project is fully operational, enabling the first 155MW of wind energy to flow into the national grid.
What Happened?
The 18-month Vunumoya MTS project, initially scheduled for March 2026, was completed in record time. It integrates Seriti Green’s Ummbila Emoyeni One Wind Energy Facility into the national grid. The first phase contributes 155MW toward a planned 900MW renewable energy roll-out, supporting South Africa’s decarbonization goals and Mpumalanga’s growing status as a clean energy hub.
The station features advanced 400kV and 132kV infrastructure and a 500MVA transformer, designed to accommodate future expansion.
Official Response
Seriti Green emphasized the project’s importance for national energy security and sustainability. Eskom and NTCSA confirmed that the station is fully energized and operational. The early completion demonstrates efficient collaboration between the private and public sectors, accelerating South Africa’s transition to renewable power.
Community Impact
The Vunumoya MTS project brings not only clean energy but also economic growth to Mpumalanga. By supplying renewable electricity ahead of schedule, it reduces reliance on fossil fuels, supports local jobs, and positions the province as a leader in South Africa’s green energy future.
