Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe, has announced the precautionary suspension of SASSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Busisiwe Memela-Khambula. The suspension, which comes with full pay, is aimed at facilitating an unhindered investigation into the circumstances surrounding her appointment.

Minister Tolashe emphasized that the decision to suspend Memela-Khambula was necessary to ensure the integrity of the investigation process, particularly given her influential position at the agency. She noted that the Office of the Public Protector has raised several serious concerns that prompted this action as part of her responsibility as the executive authority over SASSA.

In a statement, Tolashe praised Memela-Khambula’s humility in accepting the decision. “It is important to protect her dignity and integrity as we navigate these challenging waters,” the Minister remarked. She reassured the public that the actions taken are aimed at steering SASSA in a direction that best serves the millions of beneficiaries who rely on social assistance.

Minister Tolashe further stated, “While we face numerous challenges at SASSA, I am committed to making decisive decisions that ensure transparency, effectiveness, and efficiency.” She stressed the importance of maintaining a disabled organization that works tirelessly to combat hunger and poverty in the country.

In the interim, Themba Matlou, the Regional Executive Manager for Gauteng, has been appointed as the Acting CEO until the investigation concerning Memela-Khambula is resolved.
