On 18 September 2025, learners from across Amahlathi Municipality gathered at the Dohne Agricultural Research Institute for an Open Day focused on climate-smart agriculture and innovation. The event forms part of government efforts to bridge the gap between agricultural research and community development.

The Open Day featured practical demonstrations, career guidance, and a keynote address by Eastern Cape MEC for Agriculture, Ms Nonceba Kontsiwe, aimed at inspiring youth to pursue careers in agriculture using modern tools and approaches.
What Happened
The Agriculture Open Day served as a platform to showcase how climate-smart technologies can empower farmers, especially in rural communities. Learners from various schools in Amahlathi were treated to exhibitions and interactive sessions on sustainable farming methods.
In her keynote, MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe urged young people to take agriculture seriously, not only as a traditional practice but as a modern career path filled with innovation and economic potential.
“Pursue qualifications in agriculture the sector has potential to offer sustainable careers, job opportunities, and meaningful contributions to the economy,” said Kontsiwe.
She further encouraged learners to leverage their digital skills to explore innovative methods in farming, stressing that agriculture needs the energy and creativity of young people to thrive under changing climate conditions.
Official Response
Learners warmly welcomed the MEC’s address, with many expressing newfound interest in studying agriculture beyond high school. The Department of Agriculture’s collaboration with schools aims to demystify farming and align it with science, entrepreneurship, and technology.
Officials at Dohne Research Institute also demonstrated how climate-resilient crops and tech-based monitoring systems are being developed for use in the Eastern Cape’s rural settings.
Community Impact
By targeting learners, the event supports long-term youth development and agricultural sustainability.
The MEC’s call for youth involvement aligns with provincial strategies to modernise agriculture while keeping it relevant and accessible to emerging farmers and future leaders.
