The South African Police Service (SAPS) has started its Safer Festive Season operations across the country. National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has warned that attacks on police officers will not be tolerated. The operation aims to strengthen visible policing and prevent serious crimes during the holidays.

What Happened

The SAPS campaign comes as police prepare to deal with robberies, gender-based violence, and other violent crimes. General Masemola reminded South Africans that an attack on a police officer is an attack on the state. He warned that anyone who blocks police officers from doing their work will face the full force of the law.

In terms of Section 67 of the SAPS Act, interfering with officers on duty is a criminal offence. Police are legally empowered to use reasonable force when met with resistance.

Official Response

General Masemola condemned the recent Kimberley incident, where a female officer was attacked.

“We commend the officers who acted with restraint to avoid loss of life,” he said. He urged communities to respect the blue uniform and report wrongdoers instead of confronting police.

Community Impact

The Commissioner called for stronger cooperation between police and residents. “Communities that rely on the police for safety should never be the ones who attack them,” he said.
