People living with HIV are at significantly higher risk of developing certain types of cancer, according to a new awareness update from the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).
What to Know
HIV is classified as a cancer-causing agent and increases the risk of several cancers. These include both HIV-related and HPV-related cancers.
Cancers linked to HIV include:
- Kaposi Sarcoma (KS)
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Conjunctival cancer
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Cervical cancer
- Penile cancer
- Anal cancer
- Vulvar cancer
CANSA also highlights an elevated risk of cancers related to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), especially conjunctival and genital cancers.
Early Detection and Screening
To reduce their risk, people living with HIV are advised to start antiretroviral therapy (ART) early and remain consistent with treatment. According to the SA Cervical Cancer Policy:
- HIV-positive women should screen for cervical cancer at diagnosis
- Repeat screenings should occur every 3 years
- Annual screening is recommended if the first test is positive
