The Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) confirmed on 18 November 2025 that it supported 199 businesses across the province during the 2024/25 period. The intervention saved 625 jobs in small towns, townships, and rural areas. The agency released the results as part of its annual mandate delivery update.
What Happened
The ECDC reported that many local businesses continued to face a tough trading environment on 2025. To help them stay afloat, the agency used its Jobs Stimulation and Protection Fund, which allocates R10,000 for every job saved.
Through this fund, the ECDC disbursed R14.3 million to struggling companies, helping them retain staff and remain operational. The 625 saved jobs, 322 belong to women and 234 to youth. Officials said these outcomes show targeted support can strengthen the province’s economic resilience.
ECDC teams also referred supported businesses to its internal advisory services to diagnose financial distress and recommend corrective action.
Official Response
ECDC leadership said the impact reflects the agency’s commitment to keeping businesses alive and securing livelihoods.
“We focus on real solutions for real challenges facing local businesses,” an ECDC representative noted. “These interventions protect jobs and create space for long-term growth across the province.”
The agency also encouraged entrepreneurs to access its full suite of support programs.
Community Impact
Business owners described the support as a lifeline, especially in small and rural markets.
They said the incentives helped them keep workers employed and stabilize operations .
Communities welcomed the news, noting that job retention has a direct effect on household stability. Many residents hope the program will expand as more businesses seek relief.
