On Tuesday, Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa and Premier Thami Ntuli from KwaZulu-Natal convened at the Wild Coast Sun in Mbizana for the Eastern Seaboard Development Political Engagement. This pivotal meeting brought together Traditional Leaders, MECs, Mayors, and Councillors from Ugu, Harry Gwala, OR Tambo, and Alfred Nzo districts to reflect on the remarkable progress made in this strategic initiative.
The Eastern Seaboard Development, launched in 2022 under SPLUMA (Act No. 16 of 2013), is a flagship program under the District Development Model (DDM). Its vision is to transform the spatial economy by integrating urban and rural development, driving rural revitalization, and creating opportunities for communities. This initiative spans 17 local municipalities along the coastline of Southern KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Eastern Cape.
Minister Hlabisa emphasized the importance of cooperation between stakeholders, including traditional leaders, to ensure the success of the DDM.
