The Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency (ECRDA), in partnership with the Graça Machel Trust and MMX Foundation, recently hosted the Women in Agriculture and Market Access Dialogue to empower women farmers and revitalise rural economies.

The event, themed “Celebrating Women’s Power to Transform Rural Economies Through Resilience and Targeted Market Access,” brought together women farmers, industry leaders, and government partners including Cisco Edge, Meals On Wheels, SANParks, Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture, BCMM Fresh Produce Market, and WomHub.
ECRDA CEO, Mr. Simphiwe Somdyala, stressed the importance of formalising partnerships to unlock opportunities, connect farmers to markets and finance, and provide skills and support to grow competitive businesses. Keynote speaker Mrs. Shiphra Chisha of the Graça Machel Trust emphasized how collaboration empowers women to increase productivity and uplift communities.
The initiative will focus on gender-equitable land access, capacity building and mentorship for women and youth agribusinesses, financial literacy and agri-processing training, documenting success stories, and creating investment and market access opportunities.
Through this dialogue, ECRDA is driving inclusive growth, enhancing livelihoods, and strengthening the role of women and youth in transforming rural economies in the Eastern Cape.
