Eastern Cape Health Launches OR Tambo Orthopaedic Backlog Campaign

On 27 October 2025, the Eastern Cape Department of Health launched the OR Tambo Orthopaedic Backlog Reduction Campaign at Bedford Orthopaedic Hospital in Mthatha. The initiative, led by Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa, honours the late struggle icon’s birth anniversary through action that restores lives and hope.

What Happened

The six-month provincial campaign aims to reduce surgical backlogs and improve access to orthopaedic care across the province. Dedicated medical teams will perform high-volume orthopaedic surgeries, extend theatre hours, and hold surgical marathons to fast-track treatment for long-waiting patients.

Running until April 2026, the campaign symbolically spans the period between OR Tambo’s birth and passing. It represents a living tribute to his enduring values of service, compassion, and equality.

Official Response

MEC Ntandokazi Capa said the campaign emphasize  the department’s renewed focus on patient care and efficiency. “Through teamwork and commitment, we aim to restore mobility and dignity for those who have been waiting far too long,” she said.

Community Impact

The initiative is expected to benefit hundreds of patients who have endured years of pain and immobility due to surgical delays. It also strengthens the province’s ongoing efforts to modernise healthcare delivery and improve access for all.
