A district-wide infrastructure forum was held at the Alfred Nzo Council Chambers in eMaxesibeni as government departments and municipalities reviewed progress on key infrastructure projects.

The meeting formed part of ongoing efforts to align municipal infrastructure plans with the District Development Model and improve service delivery across the Alfred Nzo District.

What happened

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), working with the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, hosted a District Wide Infrastructure Forum (DWIF).

The session took place at the Alfred Nzo Council Chambers in eMaxesibeni.

According to the organisers, the forum aims to strengthen infrastructure coordination across municipalities and ensure that projects meet provincial service delivery targets.

Officials also reviewed whether municipalities are meeting financial commitments and project deadlines set at the beginning of the financial year.

Key details discussed at the forum

Presentations from municipal infrastructure departments focused on project performance and grant spending.

Key topics included:

  • Performance of infrastructure grants
  • The Municipal Infrastructure Grant framework
  • Provincial municipal infrastructure service delivery progress
  • Infrastructure grant expenditure reports

Officials also reviewed Risk Adjustment Strategy (RAS) timelines aimed at preventing underspending on infrastructure budgets.

The meeting follows an earlier forum session held on 11 December 2025.

Why it matters

Infrastructure forums are intended to improve accountability and coordination between municipalities and provincial government departments.

By reviewing progress regularly, officials aim to address service delivery challenges related to:

  • Water infrastructure
  • Sanitation systems
  • Municipal service delivery projects

The forums also help identify project delays and ensure that grant funding allocated to municipalities is spent within the required timelines.

What happens next

The District Wide Infrastructure Forum is held quarterly and allows municipalities to report on the progress of infrastructure projects.

According to the meeting update, discussions will continue during a follow-up session scheduled for 10 March 2026.

Officials from several organisations attended the meeting, including:

  • South African Local Government Association (SALGA)
  • South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL)
  • Eskom
  • Provincial Disaster Management Centre
  • Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA)

These departments work alongside municipalities to coordinate infrastructure development and resolve implementation challenges across the district.
