The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has begun relocating families displaced by the devastating floods of 9–10 June 2025, with major interventions now underway in the Mnquma and King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) local municipalities
In Mnquma, 32 families currently housed at Lillies Guest House and Cuba Community Hall will soon move into newly built Temporary Residential Units (TRUs) at New Rest, just outside Butterworth. Of the 120 planned units, 28 are already ready, with three more to be completed shortly. The remaining 89 are expected by 7 August.
Meanwhile, in the KSD municipality, over 470 TRUs are in the pipeline, thanks to support from the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the National Department of Human Settlements, and civil society partners. Work has begun at KwaLink, with other sites such as Tracor and Maydene Farm also being prepared.
Land near schools, clinics, and transport routes has been earmarked, and consultations with traditional leaders and landowners are ongoing to ensure community involvement. Spatial planning is underway to formalise settlements and bring in vital infrastructure like water, sanitation, and electricity.
Humanitarian support remains a priority. Displaced families continue to receive hot meals or groceries daily. The South African Social Security Agency will soon issue Social Relief of Distress (SRD) vouchers to help families settle into their new homes.
The provincial government has pledged to rebuild stronger, safer, and more resilient communities as recovery continues.
