The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) held a joint commemoration of World AIDS Day and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide at Forte Grounds on 01 December 2025. The event supported the 2025 theme, “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response.”
The program brought employees, unions, and community partners together to raise awareness of HIV & AIDS, TB, disability inclusion, and GBVF. Organizers said the gathering built unity and encouraged staff to support those affected by these issues.
Commitment to GBVF Awareness
Delivering the purpose of the day on behalf of the HOD’s Office, Nomalungelo Nomandela reminded attendees that the national 16 Days of Activism campaign runs from November to December. However, she stressed that the fight against GBVF takes place daily in homes, workplaces, and communities.
“As DPWI, we are one family at work and in our communities,” she said.
Honouring Colleagues and Recognizing Disability Rights
World AIDS Day, observed on 1 December 2025, offered employees a moment to honour colleagues, friends, and families affected by HIV & AIDS. Nomandela also noted that 3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The day reinforces the importance of supporting people living with disabilities and ensuring their full participation in society.
“The department is part and parcel of the community,” she added.
Focus Areas of the Program
The event centered on three priority areas:
- Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF)
- World AIDS Day
- TB Awareness
Speakers encouraged staff to seek help when facing pressure at work or in their personal lives. HOD Phucuka Penxa urged employees to rely on each other during challenging times.
“Let your guard down, we work under difficult conditions and environments,” he said.
Moving Forward
The commemoration closed with a call for ongoing awareness, compassion, and open conversations about GBVF, HIV & AIDS, and disability rights. DPWI leaders said the department will continue strengthening its internal support systems and community partnerships throughout the 2025.
