Dr Latozi Madosini Mpahleni, a renowned Xhosa musician, is still receiving tributes.

The 79-year-old passed away in Mthatha on Friday after a protracted illness.

“Having survived a heart attack whilst she was on a tour in France, as well as two Covid-19 attacks, her health status could not be back to its normalcy, as a result, from time to time, she was admitted to hospital,” said the family in a statement.

Madosini was an accomplished teacher, poet, storyteller, and pioneer in the field of music.

The legendary musician has been described as a “cultural icon”, “repository of knowledge” and considered one of the final living music keepers of traditional Xhosa culture.

Madosini was honoured by the department in her hometown of Libode in September, and an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University was ceremoniously presented to her.
