Amajuba District Municipality’s own Zakhele Mkhabela made history on Saturday, 19 July 2025, when he and his horse Mpendulo were named champions of the Dundee July 2025, walking away with the grand prize of R400,000.

Despite cold and rainy weather, thousands gathered at the Endumeni Local Municipality’s racing grounds in Dundee to witness the event’s 12 thrilling races. The crowd included KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, who joined dignitaries in celebrating what has become one of the province’s signature heritage events.

Now in its 20th year, the Dundee July has evolved beyond horse racing. It is a powerful celebration of culture, fashion, music, and rural unity — bringing together communities, families, and stakeholders from across KwaZulu-Natal.

Premier Ntuli commended the event for its ability to “inspire youth, stimulate local economies, and preserve our rich traditions.” He also applauded the role of the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) for its ongoing support in boosting rural events like this one.

As Zakhele Mkhabela hoisted his trophy and received his prize, he became a symbol of what is possible when rural talent is celebrated, supported, and empowered.
