Matatiele Local Municipality has launched a series of community initiatives to mark Human Rights Month. These activities focus on economic empowerment and support for learners.
The activities form part of the national theme “Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real”. This highlights efforts to promote dignity, equality and freedom within local communities.
What happened
On 10 March 2026, Matatiele Local Municipality partnered with the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT). Together, they hosted a Military Veterans Information Sharing Session in Matatiele.
The session provided information on opportunities in livestock farming and agro-processing. The aim was to help military veterans participate in the local economy.
According to the municipality, the initiative also supports emerging farmers. It aims to strengthen agricultural development and economic activity in the area.
The engagement formed part of ongoing government programmes. These programs recognise the role played by military veterans in South Africa’s liberation struggle and democratic development.
Official response
Municipal officials said the initiative was designed to provide veterans with access to information and opportunities that could help them develop sustainable livelihoods.
The programme emphasised agriculture-based opportunities.
Community impact
As part of Human Rights Month activities, the municipality also partnered with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
A total of 48 full school uniforms were donated to learners. This helps ensure that children can attend school with dignity.
The municipality said access to education is a fundamental right protected in the South African Constitution. The Constitution guarantees children protection and the right to basic education.
One of the beneficiaries, Nothabile Mngenela, thanked the initiative. She said the support had brought hope to many learners and families in the community.
What happens next
Human Rights Month activities continue across South Africa ahead of Human Rights Day on 21 March, which commemorates the struggle for freedom and the protection of human rights.
Municipalities and government departments often use the month to run programmes that promote community development and awareness of constitutional rights.
