In a bold move to restore justice and safeguard local businesses, KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has declared war on protection fees. For years, powerful individuals and leaders have exploited local and suburban communities, demanding hefty sums from business owners under the guise of “protection.” This rampant extortion has undermined the authority of law enforcement, with businesses reporting crimes solely to their protection fee recipients.

Mkhwanazi’s unwavering stance sends a powerful message: “Police are the only people who are to protect their communities, and they don’t need a fee for that.” His words have instilled hope in emerging businesses, previously intimidated by the threat of closure or harm if they failed to pay these illicit fees.

The scourge of protection fees has plagued KwaZulu-Natal and neighboring Eastern Cape, with perpetrators masquerading as guardians. However, Mkhwanazi’s determination signals a turning point. As the new Police Commissioner, he aims to reclaim the police’s role as the sole protectors of communities.

Recent actions underscore Mkhwanazi’s commitment. The arrest of nine police officers for attempted murder demonstrates his resolve to tackle corruption and extortion. Moreover, his assurance to the IPID Head in KZN reinforces his dedication to eradicating protection fees.

Mkhwanazi’s crusade against protection fees promises:

  • Relief from financial burdens: No longer will businesses be coerced into paying exorbitant fees.
  • Restored faith in law enforcement: Police will regain their authority, and communities will trust them to protect and serve.
  • Economic growth: A safe and secure environment will foster entrepreneurship and job creation.
