IEC sets to improve public engagement

MTHATHA: The Independent Electoral Commission held a media engagement with the media at Mayfair Hotel, Mthatha on 31, October as part of its initiative to avail itself to the public through communication.

The IEC has taken an initiative to gather feedback from the media and the public on its performance during the last elections, this as a part of the plan to improve work and communication. The organisation confirmed that the task appointed to them has never been an easy one but they are working round the clock to conquer. The last election had global attention, according to IEC, this as far as the Netherlands in an unexpected event of the formation of the Government of national unity (GNU).

Jullie Stanworth of the IEC Eastern Cape outreach and communications division pointed out  number of hindrances during the process of voter registration and voting in itself which need to be improved.

“Our country lacks service delivery and because of that, some regions are characterised by high illiteracy rate especially among the elders and poor infrastructure, this is a huge problem for the mobility of those that aim to serve South Africans in helping them get registered and vote. However the youth had a positive increase in the last election,” said Stanworth.

The IEC has claimed to work round the clock between every election for everything to run perfect and that no day is free for rest even with months away to an election. They also assured the media and the members of the public that results are fair and accurate and that there has never been nor ever will be a chance of influence from any political party.
