Greening the District: Santam, Food and Trees for Africa, and Alfred Nzo District Municipality Unite

Santam, Food and Trees for Africa, and Alfred Nzo District Municipality have joined forces to launch a tree planting project, demonstrating their commitment to environmental responsibility and community development. The launch took place at Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality, setting the stage for a greener future in the district.

Attended by prominent figures, including Acting Mayor Cllr. Msindo, Cllr. Nkomo, and Cllr. Njomi, the event highlighted the importance of tree planting in mitigating climate change and promoting community growth. Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality was recently recognized as the Best Greenest Municipality in the Province, reinforcing the district’s dedication to environmental sustainability.

Santam’s generous donation of 200 trees will be distributed across the four local municipalities, including Matatiele, Ntabankulu, and Umzimvubu. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the district’s beauty while reducing climate change. Dr. Khanga from Santam emphasized, “Today, we reaffirm our commitment to environmental responsibility and community development. This partnership demonstrates our dedication to creating a greener environment.”

Acting Executive Mayor Cllr. Nkomo expressed gratitude for Santam’s support, noting that tree planting supports biodiversity, healthy soil, climate adaptation, and cultural significance. Cllr. Njomi stressed the importance of cooperation between government and private sectors, saying, “The relationship must move from competition to cooperation.”

This initiative aligns with the Alfred Nzo District Municipality’s vision to become a self-sustainable municipality, guaranteeing effective and efficient rural development ¹.
