“If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito.”
This saying perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the Funda Mpondo Literary Festival, a vibrant celebration of storytelling, culture, and heritage. Founded by Nomawele Njongo, the festival began with humble dreams and a mere R3000, but it has grown into a significant literary event in South Africa.
On June 29, 2022, the first spark of creativity ignited a vision to highlight the power of stories and celebrate cultural heritage. Phone calls were made, friends rallied behind the cause, and a generous offer to cover the venue costs set the stage. Local small businesses and media houses partnered with the festival, ensuring its success despite the initial challenges.
The inaugural Funda Mpondo Literary Festival was held in alignment with International Literacy Day and was a resounding success. It brought together writers, poets, and artists from diverse regions across South Africa, and traditional leaders who honored the rich cultural heritage of the area. The event showcased how art and literature can unite people from various backgrounds and regions, creating a space for creativity and cultural exchange.
Nomawele Njongo, the founder and organizer of the festival, expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm for the festival’s future. “Against all odds, a literary legacy was born,” she said. “The festival has become a symbol of unity and creativity, and we are excited to continue this journey.”
The Funda Mpondo Literary Festival is set to return on September 4-5, 2024. Njongo encourages everyone to join the movement and keep the fire of storytelling burning. “Let’s come together to celebrate our stories, our culture, and our heritage,” she urged.
Mark your calendars and be a part of this inspiring event that celebrates the enduring power of literature and cultural unity.
