A Crime Intelligence operation conducted on the N2 outside Dutywa in the Eastern Cape led to the arrest of four suspects between the ages of 44 and 53. The suspects were allegedly planning a robbery and were traveling in two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz and a Ford Ranger, towards Butterworth.
During the operation, police stopped one of the vehicles, but the Mercedes Benz fled, leading to a high-speed chase. The vehicle was involved in an accident, and two occupants attempted to flee the scene. A search of the vehicle revealed an AK 47 rifle, R5 rifle, ammunition, balaclavas, and gloves.
Further investigation revealed that both vehicles were stolen in Durban at the beginning of this month. The four suspects will appear at the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Nqatha commended the Police and Amathole Law enforcement for their successful operation in thwarting the planned robbery and arresting the suspects. “I want to take my hat off for the sterling job done by SAPS and Amathole Law Enforcement. This demonstrates that the time to massage lawlessness and criminals has long gone in the province,” said MEC Nqatha.
