Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality has confirmed a fire incident that occurred on Sunday, 1 June 2025 at its Municipal Main Building, with flames engulfing the Council Chambers in what has now been declared a crime scene.
According to an official statement, on-duty security personnel reported hearing suspicious noise near the building before discovering flames erupting from the chambers. Supervisors were immediately alerted, and emergency calls were made to SAPS and the District Fire Services.
Upon arrival, the fire was found to be uncontrollable. The first responding fire truck’s water supply was quickly depleted, prompting a request for additional backup from Tsolo. SAPS officers managed the scene and began their investigation by taking statements from witnesses under Case Number: 13/06/2025.
While the fire has been extinguished, the entire building has been cordoned off and remains off-limits to staff and the public pending forensic investigations and an assessment by Disaster Management authorities.
Remote Work Directive and Service Continuity
Municipal staff based in the main building have been instructed to work from home until further notice. Departments such as Community Services, Traffic, EPWP, and the Pound will remain fully operational.
“Employee salaries will not be affected during this period,” the municipality confirmed, emphasizing the need for continued accountability, responsiveness, and flexibility from staff.
While the extent of the damage is still being assessed, contingency plans are in place to minimize service delivery disruptions. No budget for restoration has been confirmed yet, pending full evaluation of the damage.
The Municipality has extended its gratitude to SAPS, fire services, and emergency personnel for their swift and coordinated response. Further updates will follow as new information becomes available.
