The Lusikisiki Regional Court has sentenced 31-year-old Mxolisi Dingezweni to life in prison for the murder of his 30-year-old girlfriend. The crime took place on 22 March 2025 at the victim’s home in the Makhwaleni Administrative Area near KwaNtlele.
Reports state that the couple had an argument at a tavern the night before the incident. The next day, Dingezweni went to the victim’s house and stabbed her to death. He was arrested on 23 March and remained in custody until the court delivered its verdict on 28 May 2025.
The court found him guilty of murder and handed down a life sentence.
Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, the Acting District Commissioner for OR Tambo, welcomed the sentence. He condemned the rise in gender-based violence and said this case reflects a deep betrayal. “The man who should have protected her chose to end her life instead. We hope this sentence brings some comfort to the grieving family,” he said.
The police and court officials praised the efforts of investigators and the prosecution team, saying justice had been served.
Authorities continue to urge the public to report abuse and seek help before violence escalates. This case adds to the growing concern about domestic violence in communities across the Eastern Cape.
