Female correctional officers from Kokstad Medium Correctional and Ebongweni Closed Maximum Correctional Centres took the lead in searching both female and male offenders at Kokstad Medium Correctional Centre. The operation, dubbed “Basadi”, aimed to confiscate contraband and maintain security within the facility.
With the assistance of the male Emergency Support Team from Kokstad Management Area, the female officers successfully seized various contrabands, including a small amount of dagga, needles, a cell phone, and extra blankets. The operation was conducted with utmost respect for human rights, with female officers not permitted to strip search male offenders.
Senior Manager Vathiswa Sivetshe expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead the operation, emphasizing that “security is our core business”. She praised the leadership of the Management Area for trusting and affording them the opportunity to showcase their capabilities.”
Acting Area Commissioner Muzibuyile Mdlalose commended the female officers, stating that he wants them to be always involved in such operations. He emphasized that this was a refresher course to capacitate them and reminded them of their core business, which is searching. Mdlalose proudly mentioned that the Management Area has maintained an unbroken record of over 20 years without an escape, attributing this to the commitment and vigilance of the officers.
Offenders found with contraband will face internal disciplinary measures. The successful operation demonstrates the crucial role of female correctional officers in maintaining security and upholding the law within correctional facilities.
