Eastern Cape matriculants who wrote the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations will be able to access their results through several official channels once they are released in January 2026, the Department of Basic Education has confirmed.
This article explains when results are released, where learners can check them, and what steps must be taken after checking results, with a focus on Eastern Cape practices.
When Will Matric Results Be Released?
The 2025 matric results will be released nationally on 12 January 2026, following quality assurance and approval by Umalusi.
- The national announcement is made first
- Results become available at schools the following day
Learners must collect their official Statement of Results from their schools — online, SMS and newspaper results are not final documents.
Where Can Learners Check Matric Results?
1. At Schools (Official and Required)
- Results are released at schools where learners wrote their exams
- This is the only place to collect an official Statement of Results
- Schools also assist with:
- Corrections
- Re-check and re-mark applications
- Advice on next steps
This remains the most reliable method.
2. Online via Official Government Platforms
Learners can also check results online using their exam number or ID number.
The South African Government provides official guidance and access through its services portal: https://www.gov.za/services/services-residents/education-and-training/basic-education/check-matric-results
Important:
- Online results are provisional
- High traffic on release day may cause delays
3. Via SMS
Learners may register to receive results via SMS, which is often faster during peak demand.
SMS services may roll out results in batches and are subject to network delays.

4. Newspapers in the Eastern Cape
In the Eastern Cape, matric results are traditionally published in selected newspapers, most notably the Daily Dispatch.
- Results are published using examination numbers, not names
- Newspapers are available on the morning of release day
- This option is often used by learners without internet access
Newspaper results are for information purposes only and must be confirmed at schools.
Eastern Cape Explainer: How Results Are Usually Accessed
Eastern Cape learners typically follow this process:
- Results are first published nationally
- Learners check results via SMS, online platforms or the Daily Dispatch
- Learners then return to their respective schools to collect official Statements of Results
- Schools provide guidance on re-marks, re-checks, applications and appeals
This process has been followed consistently in the province and helps reduce confusion on release day.
What If Results Are Missing or Incomplete?
Some results may be outstanding due to:
- Examination irregularities
- Outstanding marks
- Administrative issues
Learners should:
- Contact their school immediately
- Follow instructions from the provincial education department
Warning Against Scams
The Department of Basic Education has warned learners to:
- Avoid websites or messages claiming to release results early
- Ignore requests for payment to “unlock” results
- Use official platforms only
Matric results are free and do not require payment.
What Learners Should Do After Checking Results
After receiving results, learners should:
- Collect their Statement of Results from their school
- Apply to universities, TVET colleges or training programmes
- Enquire about re-checks or re-marks if necessary
- Seek guidance before making final decisions
