Date:

The South African Police Services in Port St Johns are investigating an attempted murder and arson after a nephew of the ANC Chief Whip in the Port St Johns Local Municipality, was shot and injured after suspects fired shots and subsequently torched their home in Port St Johns on the night of the 9th of October 2022.

On Sunday at about 23:00 it is reported that an unknown number of suspects allegedly fired shots through windows at a house of a councillor at Nonyevu Township in Port St Johns. During the shooting  three occupants managed to flee, but the 33-year old nephew to the councillor sustained a gun shot wound in the lower body and was reportedly rushed to the hospital. It is believed that two other occupants amongst them a five-year old boy escaped unscathed.

Subsequent to the incident, the house was found engulfed in flames, which the fire fighters estinguished. A case of attempted murder with an additional charge of arson was opened for further investigation. It is reported that at the time of the incident, the Councillor was not home.
