Eastern Cape Mourns the Loss of Dr. Soyisile Nuku, Acting Head of Education Department

The Eastern Cape is in mourning following the untimely passing of Dr. Soyisile Nuku, the Acting Head of the Department of Education. Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Dr. Nuku, who passed away yesterday at the age of 64 in an East London hospital after a brief illness.

Dr. Nuku’s journey in education was marked by dedication and excellence. Beginning his career as an educator, he rose through the ranks to become a respected principal before transitioning into administrative roles, ultimately serving as a Deputy Director General. Despite retiring from the public service, Dr. Nuku’s commitment to education led him to answer Premier Mabuyane’s call in April 2023 to serve as the Acting HOD for the Department of Education.

During his tenure, Dr. Nuku played a pivotal role in the Department’s administration, contributing significantly to the recent milestone of achieving an unprecedented 81.4% matric pass rate. Premier Mabuyane praised Dr. Nuku’s unwavering dedication, describing him as a patriot who left an indelible mark on the province’s education sector.

On behalf of the Eastern Provincial Government and the people of the province, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Nuku’s family, friends, and colleagues,” stated Premier Mabuyane. “Dr. Nuku was not just a colleague; he was family. His return to service demonstrated his selflessness and commitment to the betterment of education in our province. His passing is a profound loss, and while his time with us was cut short, his legacy will endure.

Premier Mabuyane expressed regret that Dr. Nuku’s passing came at a time when his leadership was needed for the department’s stability. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Dr. Nuku’s impact will be felt for years to come.
