Citizens have been tweeting and sharing their sentiments on the current state of Durban beaches and the tourist attractions that have been affected by sewage pipes. Reports state that visitors will not be able to utilize the Durban Beaches due to eThekwini Municipality’s failure to maintain the pools on the City’s coastline.
“Raw sewage flows into Ohlanga River as Umhlanga beaches remain shut”, was a headline in one of the news outlets on 29 November 2022. This issue is still to be attended to as the festive season begins.
On Monday, 5th December 2022, the eThekwini Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Magisela said the repairs on the beachfront were impending. Magisela added that the pool hasn’t been operating for quite some time and it will soon be something of the past.
eThewkini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda is said to have understood the public’s frustration.
“Now that we have appointed a contractor we can get the pool up and running again”
“In addition, officials are finalizing the appointment of a contractor to repair the Children’s Amusement Centre pool, also at the beachfront, said Kaunda”
South Africans that visited the beach this week did not hesitate in capturing the state the beach was in resulting in “Durban” being one of the trending topics this week.
“Five days into the December festive season. Under the ANC leadership, the once thriving coastal City has gone to the dogs- seemingly no one cares. Nothing works, CBD crime is on the rise and troubling stink of urine is everywhere” tweeted Sihle Mavuso.
“Durban used to be a clean city, today under the corrupt RET ANC criminals the whole city is filthy, litter everywhere, sewerage running through the streets etc. Instead of running the city, the criminals are busy stealing” tweeted Ndabezitha Zulu.
