Why the incident matters

The shooting highlights the risks faced by police officers even inside secured police facilities.

Holding cell areas are typically restricted environments, but incidents involving suspects overpowering officers can escalate quickly, particularly when weapons become accessible.

Police also confirmed that officers involved in the incident will receive psychological support following the ordeal.

What happens next

SAPS said the officers who were held hostage will be temporarily withdrawn from active duty.

They will undergo psychological debriefing sessions before returning to operational duties.

Further internal procedures and investigations are expected to follow as part of standard police protocol after a fatal police shooting.
