As South Africa prepares to host global leaders at the upcoming G20 Summit, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched security sweeps of vehicles and convoys using its specialised Explosives and K9 units.
What Happened
On Saturday, SAPS deployed its Explosives Unit to conduct detailed inspections of official G20 motorcades. Officers were seen examining transport vehicles in an underground parking facility, accompanied by K9 teams trained to detect explosives and contraband.
The pre-summit operation is part of SAPS’ broader strategy to ensure the safety of all delegates, heads of state, and support teams arriving for the high-level diplomatic event.
“Every route and every vehicle is being checked to ensure nothing is left to chance,” SAPS confirmed in a statement shared on social media.
Official Response
The police emphasised that the operation forms part of South Africa’s national security plan to host a safe, incident-free summit.
Specialised officers are using advanced detection tools and are supported by SAPS K9s trained for explosives detection. No incidents or threats have been reported so far.
Community Impact
While the security operations are largely concentrated around summit routes and venues, SAPS said routine services in surrounding communities would not be affected.
Citizens are advised to follow updates via official SAPS channels and cooperate with any temporary roadblocks or vehicle checks in summit zones.
