A 37-year-old man from Balasi locality, reported missing on 9 September 2025 at Qumbu Police Station, was found dead in a river near Qumbu village, Eastern Cape, on 12 September. Two men, aged 32 and 34, from Magqubeni locality Tyirha A/A, have been arrested and charged with murder.

What Happened

The man was last seen on Saturday, 6 September 2025, before his disappearance was formally reported. A team led by Detective Captain Nongcawula from Qumbu Detectives launched a full investigation.

According to information received on 11 September, two men were seen assaulting the missing man in town while accusing him of theft. Acting on this lead, police traced and apprehended the suspects on Friday, 12 September 2025.

The suspects then led police to a river, where the victim’s body was found floating, his legs tied with a rope and his body bruised.

Official Response

Qumbu police acted swiftly following leads from community members. The case was handled with urgency due to the violent nature of the alleged crime.

“We followed the leads and managed to locate the suspects, who then pointed out the scene where the victim’s body was found,” a source close to the investigation confirmed.

The suspects are set to appear before Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 September 2025, on murder charges.
