Two African National Congress (ANC) councillors in Mandeni Local Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, are facing mounting public outrage after allegedly accepting a R100,000 bribe in exchange for awarding a municipal tender.

A leaked audio recording, now widely circulated in public media, reportedly details how the councillors planned to split the bribe money. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has condemned the incident as a “total abuse of power,” calling for immediate suspension and disciplinary action against the two officials.

“This is a clear betrayal of public trust,” said the DA’s KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson, urging the municipality’s ethics committee to launch a full investigation. Meyer confirmed that a formal letter will be submitted to the SAPS, demanding a criminal probe.

The Mandeni community, already frustrated by a lack of social development, has rallied behind the DA and local enterprises demanding accountability. Although the councillors’ names have not been made public, the municipal committee is expected to convene in the coming weeks to decide the way forward.
