Africa is messed up by the people who do not understand the importance of taking an oath. – the magistrate said as he prepared his duty for the day. He said this misunderstanding of the importance of the oath can easily turn into a curse. This was a stern warning to newly elected councillors of the Winnie Madikizela Mandela municipality to remember to respect the oath they made.
Local community members from all different political parties and civil society organizations were in attendance.
The council is made up of ANC as a majority with minority parties represented by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 4 councillors, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) with 5 councillors, the Socialist party of South Africa (SPSA) with 2 councillors, Democratic Alliance (DA), African Independent Congress (AIC), Academic Congress Union (ACU) and United Democratic Movement (UDM) with 1 councillor each.
The council must elect its speaker, chief whip and mayor at the beginning of the new council. Yesterday, councillor Nikiwe Madikizela and Cllr. Zithobile Mhlwazi was nominated as the speaker. Councillor Mhlwazi from the African National Congress (ANC) came victorious after a long hour of voting and counting he was officially elected as the new speaker
