The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of Mr Mpho Mafole, the group divisional head of corporate and forensic audits at the City of Ekurhuleni Metro. The incident, which occurred in recent days, has left Parliament and local officials shocked and demanding swift justice.

In an official statement, COGTA Chairperson urged law enforcement to launch an immediate and thorough investigation. He emphasised the critical role Mr Mafole played in promoting financial accountability and combating corruption within municipal structures. The committee described his death as an “attack on governance itself” and a setback in the fight for transparency and clean administratio.

The committee also called on the City of Ekurhuleni Metro to ensure the safety and protection of its officials, especially those involved in sensitive or high-risk audits. Members noted that the killing not only removes a key official from the oversight process but also risks creating a chilling effect on others working to uncover malfeasance.

COGTA has pledged to closely monitor the progress of the investigation and to hold the criminal justice system accountable for delivering timely results. It also signalled its intent to review existing protections and support mechanisms for forensic auditors across the country.

Mr Mafole was respected for his unwavering dedication to upholding financial standards and integrity in local government. His sudden and violent death has prompted tributes from colleagues and oversight bodies, who vow to honour his legacy by continuing the work he championed.
