In celebration of World Radio Day, Pondoland Times’s editor sat down with Bulelani Matshoba, a renowned radio personality, author, and household name in the community radio space. With numerous award nominations and a career spanning over eight years, Matshoba shared his insights on the impact of radio on his life and career.
Matshoba’s journey in radio began with an internship at Ugu Youth Radio, where his passion for storytelling and connecting with people inspired him to pursue a career in the industry. Today, he is driven by the feedback from his listeners, the opportunity to learn and grow, and the sense of community that comes with being part of a dynamic team.
As a radio host, Matshoba has had the opportunity to learn about history, government, and socio-economic divides. He cited his experience hosting a special broadcast during the Ingquza Massacre commemoration and conducting interviews with ministers, MECs, premiers, and mayors as examples of the platform’s power to educate and inform.
Matshoba’s goals for his radio career include creating engaging content that resonates with his audience, amplifying marginalized voices, promoting social justice, and supporting local initiatives that make a positive difference in his community.
As the radio industry continues to evolve, Matshoba believes that embracing new technologies, formats, and platforms while maintaining its unique strengths and traditions will be key to its success.
