Bafana Bafana delivered a commanding second-half performance to beat Lesotho 2-0 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier at the vibrant Peter Mokaba Stadium on Human Rights Day, thrilling a capacity crowd in Polokwane, Limpopo.
After a tightly contested first half, the breakthrough came in the 60th minute when Relebohile Mofokeng slotted home following dazzling footwork from Elias Mokwana, who carved through Lesotho’s defence with ease before laying off the assist.
Just three minutes later, Jayden Adams struck a decisive second goal, firmly tilting the match in favour of the South African senior men’s national team and leaving Lesotho unable to recover.
Despite numerous scoring opportunities, Bafana couldn’t further extend their lead. However, the result showcased their growing confidence and fighting spirit as they pursue qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Coach Hugo Broos praised his squad’s composure and intensity, but warned that the road ahead remains challenging.
“We have to prepare for next Tuesday against Benin, and it will be as difficult as it was today,” Broos said. “If we’re well prepared and can repeat this performance, I believe we can win.”
Lesotho’s coach Leslie Notsi acknowledged that the back-to-back goals were the turning point.
“In the 60th minute we lost composure and conceded, then again three minutes later. That’s when we lost the game.”
Bafana Bafana are now set to travel to West Africa for their clash against Benin on Tuesday, hoping to build on this momentum and continue their quest for a place on football’s biggest stage.
