Application regulations for R350 SRD to be amended, Minister proposes R624

Date:

On Thursday, the Department of Social Development spoke about its concerns regarding the low numbers of approvals for the Covid-19 social relief of distress (SRD) grants.

The department said that less than half of the 11 million applicants were approved for the for the month of June.

Following up on this, Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu published new draft regulation to amend some provisions for the SRD grant. The Social Development Department proposed three key amendments to applications for the SRD grant.

One of these amendments include increasing the allowable income threshold for applicants from R350 to R624. “In this regard, the department is proposing to increase the maximum allowable income from R350 to the food poverty line of R624, meaning that SASSA will decline any applicant who receives more than R624 into their bank account for each relevant month,” said the department.
