The ANC in Alfred Nzo has slammed the Democratic Alliance’s claims of taking credit for the new TebeTebe bridge, saying the infrastructure was secured through ongoing government channels and not political pressure.
The DA had earlier welcomed the opening of the bridge, stating it followed their oversight visits. However, the ANC has dismissed this as “cheap politicking” and labelled the party’s actions opportunistic.
What Happened
The TebeTebe bridge in the Umzimvubu Local Municipality was officially handed over on 18 November 2025.
While the DA claims it resulted from their intervention, the ANC says it was submitted by the local council under the Presidential Welisizwe Programme, a national rollout targeting rural areas with poor infrastructure.
The bridge is one of five completed projects in the region, with four others built in Ntabankulu, also under the same programme.
“If the DA truly wanted to help Black communities, they’d start with fixing conditions in places like Khayelitsha and Gugulethu,” said the ANC statement.
Official Response
The ANC Regional Executive said the DA’s messaging on social media was misleading and undermines the work done by local councillors and communities over several years.
They credited cooperative governance between national, provincial and municipal departments for the bridge, not party politics.
“The claims by the DA are unfounded. The bridge is the product of a submission to the Presidency through proper channels,” said regional spokesperson Lungisile Mzanywa.
Community Impact
Local residents in TebeTebe, eMaxesibeni, and surrounding villages have long struggled with unsafe crossing points during floods.
The completed bridge improves access to schools, clinics, and nearby towns — especially in the rainy season.
Recent infrastructure projects in the area:
- TebeTebe bridge (Umzimvubu)
- 4 bridges in Ntabankulu
- N2 upgrade from KwaBhaca to Ngcweleni
- Road resurfacing between eMaxesibeni and Bizana
