The Alfred Nzo Security Forum has condemned a wave of brutal attacks on private security personnel in the Alfred Nzo District, confirming that one guard was killed while others suffered severe injuries, including the amputation of both hands in one case and a broken leg in another. The forum urged immediate intervention from local and provincial authorities and demanded safer working conditions for officers on duty.
In a statement, the forum said it was “deeply shocked and outraged” by the violence and called the incidents “inhumane, unacceptable, and [to] be met with decisive action.” It appealed to the Alfred Nzo District Municipality and the Eastern Cape Provincial Government to act swiftly to protect guards who safeguard communities, property, and public infrastructure across the district.
A central concern is the practice of placing a single guard alone on night duty. The forum warned this “places workers at severe risk and must come to an immediate end,” urging government departments, private security firms, and community structures to review and strengthen night-shift protocols. It also called for uniform safety standards across the district’s private security operations.
Beyond workplace measures, the forum pressed for a coordinated response between the South African Police Service, municipal authorities, and security service providers to prevent further incidents. It requested a swift and thorough investigation and pledged solidarity with the affected families, extending condolences to those who have lost loved ones and support to survivors in recovery.
The forum’s leadership, based in Mount Ayliff, reiterated its commitment to advocating for the dignity, safety, and fair treatment of security officers who, it said, “serve our communities with dedication, courage, and professionalism.” Members urged residents to assist investigations and support measures that improve visibility and response times in high-risk areas.
