Farmers in the Sarah Baartman District have welcomed the return of the Department of Agriculture’s agricultural shows, seeing them as key platforms for showcasing produce and growing businesses.
What happened
The Port Elizabeth Fresh Produce Market hosted the fourth show of the 2025/26 financial year, bringing together farmers from the Nelson Mandela Metro and local municipalities in the Sarah Baartman District. Awards were handed out, including best mohair wool to Odwa Fede (33) and a special youth award to Phumeza Dolo for her outstanding stall. Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe outlined the show’s success and handed over 32 industrial sewing machines to 17 local enterprises to support garment production.
Previous shows were held in Amathole, OR Tambo, and Chris Hani Districts. The events are being reimagined to focus not only on product quality but also on fostering market access and commercial opportunities for small-scale farmers.

Why it matters to you
The agricultural shows offer farmers direct exposure to buyers, industry experts, and fellow producers. They provide practical guidance on improving product quality and business operations. For young farmers and entrepreneurs, the shows can be a stepping stone to expand client bases, secure sales, and explore commercial opportunities.
