AFCON Voyage Awaits Bucs Stars

Orlando Pirates is set to make a significant impact at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast as five of their star players secure spots in the prestigious tournament. The month-long football spectacle is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, 13 January 2024, culminating in the grand finale on Sunday, 11 February.

South Africa, boasting the largest contingent of Pirates players, will feature defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, striker Zakhele Lepasa, and late addition Evidence Makgopa. These Bucs talents previously showcased their skills in the opening rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November, earning them well-deserved spots in the AFCON lineup.

Midfielder Thabang Monare, making a comeback after a prolonged absence from international football, aims to contribute to South Africa’s success in AFCON. Monare, who last donned the Bafana jersey in a Friendly match against France in March 2022, adds experience and skill to the national team.

Belgian mentor Hugo Broos has also named three additional Pirates players on standby, including defender Tapelo Xoki, providing depth and support to the South African squad.

Namibian wingback Deon Hotto, a stalwart for the Brave Warriors, is set to increase his AFCON cap count as he joins Namibia’s squad. Having last participated in the tournament during the 2019 edition in Egypt, Hotto brings a wealth of experience to his national team.

Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori, another Orlando Pirates standout, awaits confirmation in Chris Hughton’s 23-man squad after making the initial 55-man provisional selection. The Black Stars commence their AFCON campaign against Cape Verde on Sunday, 14 January, while Namibia and South Africa face Tunisia and Mali two days later, promising an exciting tournament for Orlando Pirates enthusiasts.
