Mr. M. Qwase, the acting head of the department said “The purpose of the meeting is to shed light on the many miscommunications between the department and the principals including being summoned by the human rights commission for matters that do not include the department at all, with the department of health accusing the department of education of promoting teenage pregnancy”. He proceeded to dismiss the claims that he wants to terminate the contracts of principals before their retirement time.
The acting head of department congratulated the high performance of schools and shared the 72% pass rate in the Amathole district. “This initiative will also be taken to Flagstaff to reach more of our principals for a progressive relationship”, concluded Mr. Qwase.
MEC Gade said that there is a need for drastic measures to change the structure of the education system. “We cannot have 80% of learners in the Tvet colleges that study public management in the province. The students in Port St. Johns and Mthatha that were caught with cheating on their exams impacted the pass rate as we compare with provinces like Limpopo who barely beat us with 1%,” added the MEC.
He dismantled the idea that the province is pushed to believe in the business of Cannabis which is not aligned with the national development plan, saying it has bad implications on learners. In fighting low pass rates, there’s a program that will help circulate the data of subject performance between a spectrum of students at an early stage to better their chances of choosing streams that will have them achieving more than they do now.
