Motorists travelling through KwaBhaca on the N2 should expect continued traffic restrictions over the April 2026 Easter weekend due to ongoing construction works.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) confirmed that traffic flow changes in the KwaBhaca CBD will remain in place as work continues between kilometre markers 92.4 and 95 on N2 Section 19.
What happened
SANRAL announced on 27 March 2026 that construction in the KwaBhaca CBD is still underway and will affect traffic during the Easter holiday period.
Traffic through the CBD will operate under:
- Two-way traffic
- One lane in each direction
- Steel barriers separating lanes
These restrictions apply to all vehicles travelling between Kokstad and Mthatha.
Key details for motorists
Drivers are being advised to plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid congestion.
Main alternative routes include:
- Route 1: Exit N2 at Kokstad → R56 to Matatiele → via Tlokoeng → R396 to Tsolo → rejoin N2
- Route 2: Via Flagstaff → Lusikisiki → Port St Johns (R61) → rejoin N2 at Mthatha
Important travel impacts:
- The shortest alternative route is 69 km longer
- Travel time may increase by approximately 50 minutes between Kokstad and Mthatha
Why it matters
The Easter weekend is one of the busiest travel periods in South Africa, especially along the N2 corridor.
These restrictions could lead to:
- Increased traffic congestion in KwaBhaca CBD
- Longer travel times for holiday travellers
- Higher risk of delays if drivers do not plan ahead

- Construction is ongoing in KwaBhaca CBD on the N2
