The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) healthcare teams completed 89 cataract surgeries during Project OWETHU in Limpopo Province.
The operations took place on Friday, 13 February 2026, at Elim Hospital in Makhado. The initiative forms part of the SANDF’s ongoing effort to extend essential healthcare services to underserved communities.
What is happening?
Project OWETHU is the South African National Defence Force’s humanitarian healthcare campaign aimed at supporting provincial health services.
On 13 February 2026, SANDF Surgeon General Lieutenant General Dr Ntshavheni Maphaha joined Limpopo Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego at Elim Hospital. Military healthcare professionals performed critical eye operations and removed cataracts for patients who had waited long periods for surgery.
According to hospital officials, the team completed 89 successful procedures. This exceeded the stated weekly target of 75 cases. Hospital staff commended the initiative for its results and efficiency.
The campaign is continuing at the facility to assist more patients requiring specialised eye care.

Why it matters to you
Many patients in rural and peripheral areas face long waiting periods for specialist medical procedures.
Therefore, outreach campaigns like Project OWETHU help reduce surgical backlogs and restore vision for vulnerable residents. Improved access to cataract surgery can significantly improve daily functioning, independence and quality of life.
In addition, the initiative shows cooperation between national defence health services and provincial health authorities.
