What Happened During the Operation

During the multi-agency #NenzaniLaEzweni operation on 5 January 2026, officers from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), Durban Metro Police, and SAPS intercepted a vehicle carrying illegal firearms and ammunition. The suspects were unable to produce documents compliant with the Firearms Control Act.

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed that the vehicle used was also fitted with illegal security lights, a contravention of the National Road Traffic Act. The car has since been impounded.

  • 800 rounds of ammunition and illegal firearms recovered

  • Investigation into violations of Firearms Control Act underway

Official Response and Investigation

MEC Duma praised the collaborative law enforcement effort and called for a full investigation. He stressed that KwaZulu-Natal road networks must not be used for illegal firearm movement, which contributes to violent crime and robberies.

“We do not want our road networks to be used as part of the illegal supply and movements of firearms and ammunition,” said Duma.

Why It Matters for Communities

The seizure highlights growing concerns about unauthorised firearm circulation and impersonation of law enforcement officers. Authorities say clamping down on illegal blue light use is now a priority across the province.
