Six family members of Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga have lost their lives in a road accident on the N11 in KwaZulu-Natal. Chikunga’s son, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren died in the accident on Sunday night. A sedan and a bakkie were believed to have been involved in the collision.
The Department of Transport confirmed it in a statement on Tuesday.
“The family of the Deputy Minister was traveling on the N11 between Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal where it is believed that they met with a car accident between a van and a sedan,” said the department.
Chikunga, added the transport department, was travelling to KwaZulu-Natal to identify the remains of her loved ones and get to the bottom of the accident.
“Further details about the accident will be released once full information is established from local authorities,” said Collen Misibi, head of communications for her office
The deputy minister asked for confidentiality until further details emerge.
