Deputy Minister of Social Development Ganief Ebrahim Hendricks has called on government departments to strengthen collaboration to improve service delivery in Tembisa. He delivered the message during the SASSA Outreach Programme, where he emphasized the importance of coordinated support for communities.
Expanding Partnerships to Support Young People
The Deputy Minister urged SASSA to broaden its partnerships by working closely with the Departments of Agriculture, Science and Innovation. He said these partnerships would benefit the youth, who make up nearly 40% of Tembisa’s population. He added that collaboration in agriculture, science, technology, and artificial intelligence can open meaningful opportunities and help young people grow into future leaders.
Honouring the Legacy of the Mandelas
Mr Hendricks reflected on the leadership of Winnie and Nelson Mandela. He reminded attendees that Winnie Mandela was a social worker who believed in taking services directly to communities. He said she would be proud to see the Department of Social Development continue that legacy. The department is reaching residents where they live.
Addressing Social Challenges in Tembisa
The Deputy Minister also spoke about pressing issues affecting the community. He stressed drug abuse, crime, and gender-based violence as major concerns. He assured the community that government remains hands-on in tackling these challenges. He added that support for persons with disabilities will continue. The focus is on improving their access to essential services.
