Three wards in Mthatha West—11, 12 and 37—met on 3rd of December for a joint climate-risk awareness session. The gathering, hosted by King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality with OR Tambo District, focused on dangers linked to severe weather. Officials urged residents to prepare as storms grow stronger each year.
What Happened
The session educated communities about disasters linked to shifting weather patterns. Speakers unpacked the causes of recent floods, including the major storm that hit the area on 10 June. Residents shared their experiences and raised concerns about high-risk spots in their villages.
“We cannot go through another storm unprepared,” one community leader said.
Official Response
Municipal teams issued clear guidance on safer building practices. They urged families to avoid riverbanks, steep edges and unstable sites. In addition, teams encouraged residents to re-evaluate how they collect water in areas with strong winds.
Traditional leaders also received a call to support awareness drives. “We need cooperation from every household and every village,” an official said.
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the session, saying the advice helps them protect their homes as weather events intensify. Some noted that past storms left families with heavy losses, making preparation urgent. Municipal officials promised ongoing support and follow-up visits to high-risk areas.
