Farmers gathered at the KwaBhaca Auction Site on 20 November 2025 for what was meant to be a routine livestock auction. However, the event shifted into an information-sharing session after the recent Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak reported in neighbouring provinces. Government departments and agricultural agencies used the platform to equip farmers with updates on the disease and new farming opportunities.
What Happened
The scheduled livestock auction was cancelled as a precaution following the FMD outbreak. Instead, Umzimvubu farmers received detailed information on the disease and its prevention.
Stakeholders present included:
- Department of Agriculture
- Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency
- Agricultural Research Council
- Small Enterprise Development Funding Agency
- Ntinga Development Agency
- Department of Social Development
- Tyelimhlophe Agricultural School
- Tsolo Agricultural College (TADI)
- Animeds and Epol
They shared updates on FMD risks, health protocols, government grants, funding options, and improved farming practices.
Official Response
A member of the Local Economic Development Standing Committee, Cllr Mbongeni Magobane, led the session and encouraged farmers to exchange knowledge and strengthen best practices.
Officials emphasised collaboration as an essential tool in protecting livestock health and supporting sustainable farming in the district.
Community Impact
The programme provided farmers with practical guidance and renewed confidence despite the concerns surrounding FMD. Attendees welcomed the information, noting that the session helped them understand the risks, support available, and new growth opportunities within the agricultural sector.
