A violent cash-in-transit heist unfolded outside Midway Mall in Newlands West on Tuesday afternoon. The attack left a security officer seriously injured after he was shot by heavily armed suspects. Emergency teams rushed to the scene as panicked shoppers raised the alarm.
What Happened
According to responders, the chaos began when 10 to 12 gunmen targeted a cash vehicle outside the mall. They used explosives to blast the van open and fired multiple shots, damaging three nearby vehicles.
Moreover, the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables, leaving the area in shock. The roadway remained closed for hours while investigators combed through the scene.
Official Response
KZNVIP Emergency Units confirmed that their teams were dispatched after receiving several calls from the public.
“One of the officers was found near the informal trading area with a gunshot wound,” the organisation said. Medics stabilised him on-site before taking him to hospital for further treatment.
Police have not released additional details but say the investigation is active.
